Dot.com to Dot.Bomb

The dot.com to dot.bomb boom presented the 5 stages in which the dot.bomb occurred: 1) innocent beginnings 2) BOOM 3) INSANITY 4) BUST- a lot of people lost a lot of money 5) The crawl back to sanity Each of these steps introducing new challenges that people faced, things are still changing but on an upward slope that will hopefully only get better and help technology prosper. A lot of people lost their trust in technology and the internet when the boom happened but with all the new inventions and new opportunities I think that people will be able to securely take risks and they won't be losing nearly as much as they put in.

What makes a community?

A community is a group of people in a common place with similar admirations, there are lots of different mediums in which a community can take place. From an actual physical community like UW Tacoma Students with a common admiration of UW and getting an education, to an online community such as facebook. In my opinion being a community is being around people who have similar goals, ideals and aspirations as I do. Friends, family, peers and acquaintances can all be participants in our communities; everyone has different ideas of what it may take to create a community and that's okay. Having different ideas presents new and exciting ways to look at things. You don't have to belong to just one community either, people can belong to many different communities and they all add something different to the member of the communities. I think that the idea of a community is changing with the increase in technology and media but that could be a good or bad thing; we shall see as it goes.

StartUp.com

This movie showed the negative outcome that occurs sometimes when people start a new company, although they started out strong and on a positive incline nothing works out perfectly. Kaleil and Tom were perfect examples of why you shouldn't work with people you have friendships with, starting a job adds different pressures to a friendship then there was before and most people can't work through it. What I found most valuable about this movie was the motto they said, 'all day, every day, every way'. It is the perfect example of what companies should be focusing on, trying to be successful in all ways to create something better and to be better.

What would you NOT buy online?

While I do a lot of online shopping for it's convenience there are still some things that I wouldn't ever think of buying online. Some things I purchase online would be my textbooks, shoes, phone cases, bedding, etc. Things that if it doesn't work I have the option to return them. Some things that I would NEVER buy online would be food, I know that there is online grocery shopping and ordering food from companies but that is something that I would never do because I would worry about where my food is coming from. If it is so convenient for me to buy the food from them online then wouldn't it be easy for them to lie about the quality of food so that they can get the most convenient food sources for them even if it isn't such high quality? Along with food would be drinks, we talked about ordering wine in class but I feel like that is taking a leap of faith, it is so easy for companies to falsify or mislead us about the product/products that we are purchasing. While my ideas may change a little as life gets busier and I am searching for things that are more convenient at the moment I would rather drive to the grocery store and look around rather then order online.

HTML PAGE CONSTRUCTION.

Okay, I have tried to figure out how to do this on three different occasions and I don't have a clue as to how to do it on my computer. I have tried to create the page through Safari and I tried through the Netscape webpage as well. The instructions seem quite easy reading them through but I can't find where the hell to retrieve the HTML page codes... I will keep trying on this and I am going to ask Professor tomorrow but this is so confusing because I don't know where to look for or find the short hands that it says we need to find.

A visit from Derek Young:

I really enjoyed him coming to class, when he was explaining Tacoma Runners I realized the link between him and Erik Hanberg have in common; successful manipulation of social media. I was really curious as to what Tacoma Runners was and when he was explaining how they started with 12 people who didn't know each other but had seen it on twitter and now there are hundreds I thought it was the coolest thing since sliced bread. You would never think that something like that would spread so fast and have such an amazing outcome. I know that the next charity or event that I attend I will reach out on social media because you never know who has the same interests and desires to help that you do.

Scavenger Hunt in Class

So far we have answered almost every question on the scavenger hunt, included are the screenshots and the questions to which they coordinate. Here is the link to our google doc where everything we have is uploaded. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1nr8W1ld5w3YROi_4Jqeml89UAtKToSkP1HUDIX10dTY/edit

Erik Hanberg- Guest Speaker

I found Erik to be an interesting person, he was a master of many things. What I found to be most interesting was the fact that he was a self published author and that he is so successful. The fact that he has been able to make a larger profit then if he were to have had a publisher is interesting to me because before I wasn't aware of the steps that were needed to actually write and publish a book. The fact that he spent two years on a book was baffling, that takes a lot of dedication and it gives me hope that one day I will be passionate about something like that with the possibility of being so successful. Another thing I found to be informative was the perspective of using media to promote things and how effective that really is. When he was explaining to us about how he put a chapter of his book online and then promoted it through his website and social media I realized that they can be efficiently used for so much more then sharing pictures with your friends. Overall, I found Mr. Hanberg to be helpful and informative as well as entertaining. I hope to read one of his books someday!

the web is using us

After watching the video in class I would have never been able to tell that it was from 2007, the concepts that it highlights about are still relevant today! The internet is constantly evolving, becoming easier to use and reaching new capacities that wouldn't have been even imagined 10 years ago (google glasses for example). While I found the whole video to be true the quote that I heard and I thought is just perfect was, 'we are the web' which is incredibly true. We have so much information at our fingertips and yet we still aren't satisfied, how can that be? When I was younger I thought that a desktop computer was the coolest thing since sliced bread but now there are laptops, tablets, mini tablets and especially our phones, they are the most portable computer we have. There are always upsides to these kinds of advances but there are also downsides so looking at both sides is the best way to understand what we are doing. Just like on the first day we talked about security cameras and how everyone is okay with having them so they protect your house but only a handful would be okay with putting them inside your house to 'spy' on kids, pets, etc. I think the most important part of the web and all the electronic things we have is to be aware of what they are capable of.

What I want out of TINST 207.

In this course I want to better understand the principles of a virtual world as well as learn all the ins and outs of how our technology has evolved into what it is today. There are so many different servers, websites and ways to explore the world wide web; I want a better understanding of just how large the world wide web really is. We use technology everyday and I know that I would have a really hard time functioning without it, as bad as that might sound. I also want to learn the things that I don't know; a good example of that is how to make a blog. As well as learning all the different components that together create the virtual world we are all consumed in.
